New York Film Festival Posters

Roy Lichtenstein

On the occasion of the 50th New York Film Festival kicking off this week, I’ve rounded up posters that had been commissioned for the annual Lincoln Center event. As I did not have access to an archive, I was only able to locate images for roughly half. The 1962 poster for the first NYFF, below, was by Larry Rivers. He was the first of a long roster of art stars to undertake the assignment. Notably absent, (from those I found, at least) were Peter Max and Milton Glaser.

Pottery Backstamps

Those mysterious combinations of letters, numerals, pictograms, incised marks and assorted other identifying symbols found on pottery are called “backstamps.” Like every other specialized language, their meaning is beyond the comprehension of a layperson. But if you’ve ever watched a specialist on say, Antiques Roadshow divine detailed information about the who-what-where-when of manufacture from these cryptic marks, you’ve seen how laden with nuance they are to those in the know.
